Job Summary

The post holder In collaboration with the Ward Manager will be responsible for the provision of safe and effective patient care on the ward.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Component:

  • To ensure safe and effective care of children and their carers.
  • To participate in direct nursing care from admission through to discharge.
  • To facilitate and co-ordinate timely, planned discharge into the community or referring hospital.
  • To negotiate care with families.
  • To be knowledgeable in the broader aspects of paediatric nursing.
  • To challenge nursing practices in a way that promotes and advances nursing.
  • To make a significant contribution to multi-disciplinary events e.g., ward rounds.

Educational Component:

  • Participate in teaching of junior team members.
  • To be a resource for education of students and all staff and parents.
  • To maintain current clinical, educational and professional knowledge.
  • To ensure on-going assessment of students.
  • Ensure that research findings are used appropriately to enhance patient care.

Management:

  • To develop leadership skills.
  • To act as an innovator, bringing new ideas to the ward.
  • Assist the ward manager in initiating change.
  • Provide effective communication links with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Participate in resource management i.e., annual leave/sickness absence.
  • To participate in the organisation of the daily clinical workload.
  • To participate in and critically analyse skill mix and engage in duty rosters.
  • Participate in recruitment through informal visits, representing the hospital externally; to portray a positive image.

Professional:

  • To present and act at all times in a professional manner and ensure that all staff do likewise.
  • To be aware of the hospital’s disciplinary and grievance procedure and act appropriately.
  • To be accountable for one’s own action in accordance with the “Code of Professional Conduct for each Nurse and Midwife”.
  • Ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the course of employment.
