Professional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and carry an outpatient musculoskeletal caseload from orthopaedic, emergency, urgent care and general consultant referrals throughout CHI sites.
  •  Undertake an appropriate musculoskeletal assessment, draw up individual treatment plans and provide effective treatment to all referred patients to the specialty.
  • Clinical physiotherapy services to children and young people attending inpatient services in CHI Tallaght across a range of specialties including but not exclusive to respiratory, developmental, general paediatrics, complex diasability.
  • Close liaison with paediatric musculoskeletal MDT including consultants, advance nurse practitioners, HSCP’s and NCHD’s in relation to patient assessment, treatment, follow up and discharge.
  • Demonstrate evidence based practice through the process of clinical reasoning and decision making and applying it to complex cases with due regard for Physiotherapy professional standards, as outlined by CORU & the ISCP
  • Maintain own CORU required professional development and competency.
  • Maintain clinical expertise an up-to-date knowledge of research findings and new practices within the area of specialism through regular continuing professional development and applying this knowledge to improve practice and progress service development.
  • Maintain skill-set and competency in wider Paediatric sub-specialties such as respiratory, pain and developmental for purposes of inpatient cover and cross cover.
  • Lead and collaborate in the strategic planning and development of integrated cross site Paediatric Physiotherapy Services within CHI.
  • Provide clinical support, advice, teaching and training for the physiotherapy departments in CHI to promote clinically effective physiotherapy intervention across the wider patient cohort.
  • Liaise with patients, carers and other health professionals to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Maintain good communications with Consultants, MDT, community care team members for early discharge from acute services and transfer to appropriate follow – up.
  • Ensure that privacy and dignity of the patient is respected at all times.
  • Maintain an accurate record-keeping system to comply with legal requirements, to support clinical studies and to provide information for data collection.
  • Attend clinics, team meetings and / or ward rounds when necessary.
  • Provide clinical supervision and contribute to competency evaluation of Staff Grade physiotherapists, delivering Paediatric Physiotherapy services in CHI at Tallaght.
  • Engage in performance appraisal and PDP with the Physiotherapy Manager.
  • Engage in and seek clinical supervision arrangements suitable to underpin own clinical practice – peer, mentorship etc.
  • Participate in the education and supervision of physiotherapy assistants, students and other professional and ancillary staff as required
  • Advise and support changes in work practices and procedures in keeping with best practice developments in Paediatric physiotherapy
  • Participate in senior and staff grade development and be a resource for senior and staff grade physiotherapists in the areas of planning, service development and service evaluation
  • Participation in the TUH / CHI Tallaght Physiotherapy ‘Out of Hours’ service which includes on-call and weekend Respiratory & Orthopaedic Physiotherapy interventions across both adult and Paediatric inpatient wards / HDU / ICU.
