Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) operates as a single service across the existing Dublin children’s hospitals, Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght. Also, the paediatric outpatient and urgent care centre, Connolly which opened in July 2019 and the Tallaght Emergency Care Unit which is due to open in 2021. CHI governs and operates local paediatric services for the Greater Dublin Area and all national paediatric specialist services, some of which are on an all-island basis.

  • 25% of our population are children under 18 years of age. The majority are healthy, however 1/4 of these are three-year olds who are obese, 16% of our children have a chronic disease, such as, diabetes, allergies and asthma. 2% are acutely ill or have complex care needs
  • CHI currently has a staff of 3,600 delivering care annually to 334,500 children, young people and their families through 39 clinical specialities and 442 in-patient & day care beds
  • 2019 activity: In-patients 24,500; Day cases 33,500; Outpatients 147,500; ED 129,000

The new children’s hospital, which will open in 2023 will bring together the three children’s hospitals into a world class building on a campus shared with St James’s Hospital.  This will be a leading campus in healthcare and research in Ireland, a leading adult teaching hospital, a children’s hospital and in time, a new maternity hospital, when the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital is relocated on the campus.  ​

The Role of Consultant General Paediatrician (Forensic Medicine) – 39 hours at Children’s Health Ireland will commence initially at Crumlin – NCHPDP06 – Closing date Friday, 17th June, 2022 at 17:00hrs.

Candidate may have to work on other sites as part of a single Intensive Care Medicine service and team which will be moving to the new National Paediatric Hospital in 2024.

The new Consultant Paediatrician will work with the existing General Paediatricians to advance the development all aspects of General Paediatrics at CHI at Crumlin and, work with our colleagues across the city to plan for, and develop, the Department of General Paediatrics at the New Children’s Hospital and the CHI Paediatric Outpatient and Urgent Care Centres. This will include developing new models of care and service delivery.

The new post holder will support the development of child protection protocols and guidelines within the hospital, and along with his/her colleagues, support the paediatric consultant body in the assessment and management of complex child abuse cases. The post holder will provide clinical support, advice and consultation on child protection cases and general paediatric cases if required by consultant colleagues. 

The new post holder will work closely with the Forensic Unit Nurse Coordinator (ADON) and clinical and administrative staff in the unit to develop referral pathways, service coordination, and the planning and delivery of an efficient and effective service. The post holder will be responsible for examiner rosters, peer review, guideline development, development of policy and procedure, data collection, governance of service, staff recruitment, staff training and development of the service.

The establishment of a state of the art Forensic Medical Service for Children &Adolescents, located within the proposed Barnahus East model will bring Medical, Social work and Gardaí together to provide a one stop shop for child and adolescent victims of sexual abuse. This 0.5wte commitment to child protection/FME would ensure participation in all aspects of forensic medical and Barnahus processes.

Applicants must be:-

Registered as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of paediatrics.

A minimum of one year Clinical fellowship, or specialist training, in child protection / FME, national or international.
