Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) operates as a single service across the existing Dublin children’s hospitals, Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght. Also, the paediatric outpatient and urgent care centre, Connolly which opened in July 2019 and the Tallaght Emergency Care Unit which is due to open in 2021. CHI governs and operates local paediatric services for the Greater Dublin Area and all national paediatric specialist services, some of which are on an all-island basis.

  • 25% of our population are children under 18 years of age. The majority are healthy, however 1/4 of these are three-year olds who are obese, 16% of our children have a chronic disease, such as, diabetes, allergies and asthma. 2% are acutely ill or have complex care needs
  • CHI currently has a staff of 3,600 delivering care annually to 334,500 children, young people and their families through 39 clinical specialities and 442 in-patient & day care beds
  • 2019 activity: In-patients 24,500; Day cases 33,500; Outpatients 147,500; ED 129,000

The new children’s hospital, which will open in 2023 will bring together the three children’s hospitals into a world class building on a campus shared with St James’s Hospital.  This will be a leading campus in healthcare and research in Ireland, a leading adult teaching hospital, a children’s hospital and in time, a new maternity hospital, when the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital is relocated on the campus.  ​

The Role of Clinical Nurse Specialist Rheumatology – Closing date Tuesday, 14th December 2021 at 17:00hrs

This is a specified purpose full time post (39 hours per week).

There is a major clinical focus to the role. Responsibilities of the role will comprise of assessment, planning delivery and evaluation of care given to patients and their families as the caseload and role requires. The CNSp will be required to work in close collaboration with nursing and medical colleagues and the wider MDT. The CNSp in Rheumatology will participate and disseminate research and audit and provide consultancy in education and clinical practice to patients, their families, nursing colleagues and MDT colleagues and others as required. Enabling patient empowerment to achieve optimum well-being using appropriate care planning/case management in collaboration with medical and MDT colleagues will provide the foundation for the role. This will also involve advocating on behalf of the patient and promoting self-care through appropriate strategies. Patient education will include specific topics families and or carers will be integral to this health promotional role

The CNSp role in Rheumatology provides a referral service to infants and children who experience Rheumatology issues from birth or acquired at any stage during their childhood.

The purpose of the role is to provide a comprehensive family and person centred care and journey to children with a variety of Rheumatology disorders.

The purpose of this role is detailed below : 

  • The CNSp will be part of the multi-disciplinary team that delivers care to the children referred to the service.
  • The role of the CNSp is to provide support for parents and children in this service
  • Provide education and training to parents and children who require it.
  • Be a resource for colleagues, allied professionals.
  • Be an advocate for the patient and ensure competence in area of specialty practice.
  • Be responsible for the provision of a nursing, education and management consultation service in all areas of  child and adolescent
  • Provide a service, which optimises quality and continuity of care for patients with Rheumatology illnesses and their families.
  • Provide a programme of education and training for multidisciplinary staff which benefits children and their parents.

 

Essential Criteria:

  • Be registered on the Children’s Division and/or the  General Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by  the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland 
    And
  • Have at least 5 years post registration experience of which 2 must be in the speciality
    And
  • Higher Diploma (Level 8) in relevant area or commitment to undertake same within 2 years.
    And
  • Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role
    And
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development at the appropriate level

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in managing organizational and professional change.
