Purpose of the Role

In Ireland each year between 160 and 200 patients under the age of 16 years are diagnosed in CHI @ Crumlin with a cancer or a benign haematological/Bone marrow failure condition requiring treatment from the childhood cancer services. All children have their diagnosis made or confirmed in the childhood cancer services within CHI@ Crumlin. Treatment complexity has increased in recent years related to scientific advances particularly in diagnostics, haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT),immunotherapy, radiotherapy modalities and other novel therapies This has resulted in improved overall disease-free survival for some patients while increasing survival time generally for others. The physical and psychological effects of the trajectory of illness can be overwhelming for some patients and caregivers. The CNS role is central to facilitate trust and confidence during the child’s journey, address patient expectations and promote wellness, leading to improvements in patient outcomes, adherence with treatment and satisfaction with care.

 

Essential Criteria:

  • Be registered on the Children’s Division and/or the General Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
  • Have at least 5 years post registration experience of which  a minimum is 3 years’  in acute Paediatrics with 2 in Paediatric Haematology/ Oncology.
  • Higher/ Graduate Diploma in Haematology/Oncology or Cancer Nursing or to be willing to undertake same within 2 years.
  • Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development at the appropriate level.

 

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in managing organizational and professional change.
  • Identify and facilitate nursing and clinical audit
