Purpose of the Role

The post holder has a pivotal role in the Development of General Paediatrics Services across Children’s Health Ireland. It is envisaged that aligned with the model of care, the general paediatric nurse specialist will be capable of providing nursing care and management for the majority of patients referred to the service whilst identifying those patients who require onward referral to a tertiary specialist. As the General Paediatric service is developed that future roles will evolve to meet the changing needs of the population.

The post holder will have an important educational role within the interdisciplinary team and will play a lead role in the development of quality initiatives ensuring the standard of care to the children and their families is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of CHI.

The post holder will be responsible for providing specialist, evidence based nursing care to children and their families and should have the necessary skills knowledge and experience to make adjustments to accommodate varying age groups, and be specifically aware of the unique needs of adolescents.

Essential Criteria:

  • Be registered in the Children’s Division of the active Register held by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or be entitled to be so registered.
  • Have 5 years post registration experience and a minimum of 2 years in the specialty or related area.
  • Have a recognised relevant post graduate course level 8* on the NFQ framework**.
  • Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing learning and professional development.

*Candidates without the relevant level 8 qualification must have undertaken a formal post registration clinical education at Higher Certificate or higher, relevant to the area of specialist practice.

** In circumstances where an award or modules relevant to the area of specialist practice are not available, the applicant must demonstrate that he/she has successfully undertaken a substantial course/programme relevant to the specialist area of practice prior to application. Candidates without the relevant post graduate course will be appointed at CNM2.
